Mahatma Gandhi ashes to be scattered in South Africa
Some of the ashes of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi are to be scattered at sea off South Africa’s coast on Saturday.
Gandhi’s grand-daughter, Ela Gandhi, told the BBC that a family friend had kept the ashes for decades. They were handed over to the family last year.
After Gandhi was assassinated 62 years ago, his ashes were distributed among family, friends and followers.
Ashes are customarily scattered over a body of water shortly after cremation.
These ashes will be scattered at sea exactly 62 years after his death.
Boats carrying about 200 family members and friends will be joined by South African navy vessels in the sea near Durban for the ceremony, Ms Gandhi, who lives in Durban, said.
Correspondents say it is difficult to estimate how many people received a portion of Gandhi’s ashes after he was cremated in 1948.
The majority would probably have been scattered in a river or at sea shortly afterwards, according to Hindu custom.
“A family friend, Vilas Mehta, decided to keep some of Gandhi’s ashes as a memento, not realising that according to Hindu customs they should be immersed,” Ms Gandhi told the BBC.
She handed over a “little silver container” to her daughter-in-law on her death bed and told her to “keep it very safe”.
“The daughter-in-law thought the family should have the ashes and she brought it to us last year.
“We started thinking – what shall we do with it? We had a couple of options. But then our broader family said, the ashes must be immersed.”
In 2008, some of Gandhi’s ashes, kept for years by an estranged son, were donated to a museum in Mumbai which arranged a ceremony to scatter them in the Arabian sea.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic on 30 January 1948.
Gandhi made South Africa his home for 21 years, working as a lawyer and activist.
N Korea fires artillery near disputed sea border
North Korea has fired artillery near their disputed sea border with South Korea, a day after the shooting, to be replaced two in the same area, according to the reports.
The North fired several volleys of artillery at the border on Thursday, Yonhap news agency.
According to an unnamed official quoted by the Associated Press, the missiles fell into the waters of North Korea.
Do not react the south, said the official. On Wednesday, he called for the dismissal of the North provocation .
But North Korea said the shots were part of an annual military exercise is maintained.
The second incident came within days after the North has identified two areas of navigation in the region, some waters of South Korea to 29 March.
On Wednesday, the first shells landed in the north of the northern maritime border, while Seoul troops bullets, while in the air, the news agency AFP.
The BBC John Sudworth in Seoul says the incidents are regarded as a piece of raw military diplomacy instead of a direct threat to strengthen another example of the strategy of escalating the tensions in North Korea to its position at negotiations.
The water of the West is a constant source of military tensions between the two Koreas.
There were three deadly trade between the two Koreas, along the sea border in the last decade.
In the latest incident in November last year, his forces fought a brief gun battle that the North Korean sailors dead and injured three more left.
South Korea recognizes the northern boundary line, one side led by the UNC Coalition created to the demarcation of the seas, at the end of the Korean War 1950-53. The line was never accepted by North Korea.
The inter-Korean relations have fluctuated in recent months. Make concluded with a joint industrial park in Kaesong administration without the express consent of the 21st January.
The attempt of the dialogue was held under the new tensions that apparently by an analysis of South Korea, a tank, military coup or popular uprising is likely to cause in the north, then head of North Korea Kim Jong – he dies.
But North Korea has declined recently, a small amount of aid from South Korea.
The United States, China, Russia, Japan and South Korea regularly talk about his hope that North Korea comply with international talks on ending its nuclear program.
Sri Lanka special forces ‘raid Fonseka campaign HQ’
The Colombo campaign office of defeated Sri Lankan presidential candidate Gen Sarath Fonseka has been raided, his supporters say.
One of the general’s aides told the BBC that he believed special forces were engaged in the operation.
Another said that he believed that the raid was being carried out with the aim of breaking links between Gen Fonseka and those who worked with him.
Gen Fonseka has refused to accept his defeat in the elections.
He argues that his supporters were intimidated and the result was fixed.
On Thursday the general told the BBC Sinhala service that he wanted to leave the country because of death threats.
As votes were being counted on Wednesday, troops surrounded him inside the hotel where his campaign was based on suspicion he was plotting a coup.
A senior government official, Laxman Hulugalle, would only say that “a process of investigations is going on” in relation to Gen Fonseka.
He would not confirm a raid was in progress or say what was being investigated.
All journalists have been stopped from entering the street where the campaign office is situated.
But reporters in the area say they believe up to 100 special forces entered the site.
The government denies Gen Fonseka is being investigated because of his decision to stand in the acrimoniously fought elections.
On Thursday Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said the government was considering taking action against him.
Mr Rajapaksa said Gen Fonseka had allegedly divulged sensitive information to the public.
He told BBC News he was angry with Gen Fonseka for making false allegations against him in public.
Mr Rajapaksa said Gen Fonseka had been wrong to tell a newspaper the defence secretary had ordered the killings of three senior Tamil Tiger rebels as they had tried to surrender in the final stages of the conflict last May.
Gen Fonseka later retracted his statement and said his words had been taken out of context.
But Mr Rajapaksa told BBC News the retraction was not enough.
“He accused me of saying that I gave wrong orders. It came out in the newspapers. So we will follow legal procedures. If he has violated certain laws then we will take action.
“He had done many mistakes, remember. He was a member of the security council. He only left three months ago. He divulged certain security information to the public. He did a wrong thing there.
“But we will not arrest him because he was the opposition candidate.”
Survey raises concerns over quality of teaching
Wherever the data from a survey of Scottish questions about the quality of teaching in primary schools.
Program of BBC Scotland is not mentioned too much government in the pursuit of achievement, according to the elementary school, how well their students do to show highlights.
In recent years, teachers thought their children were three times more in science, as evidenced by the following tests. In mathematics, P7 teachers were twice as optimistic than reality.
During the reading of the teachers thought their students were P7 and a half times better than the results of tests performed.
Research shows achievements of primary school teachers in Scotland have little confidence in their ability to teach science – even if it is a component of the new curriculum of the Government Excellence.
When surveyed, 28% of teachers said they were very confident about teaching biology to P7 pupils. That fell to 11% for the chemical industry – and only 10% for physics.
The Scottish Executive has begun a comprehensive review of teacher training, work next month.
There is access to a range of results, which casts further doubt on the quality of primary school in Scotland – and teachers are provided.
The researchers found that the University of Dundee, who saw in the teaching of elementary level students at the school of their own institution for two thirds of which is not the P7, which is expected to teach math – although it could dominate an unlimited number of efforts to find the mark.
International studies also show the performance of Scotland in the primary and secondary education is slipping – and achievement in mathematics, science and reading is in decline.
Reading under the age of 10 years has improved since the turn of the century.
The P5 has not improved achievement in mathematics in 1995 – and science has become even worse.
Education Minister Mike Russell of the BBC Scotland, said: The review of teacher education should lead to equality of teacher training – although I think that is high in many areas.
I do not demean or diminish the quality of our education, I think it is generally very good.
We also have smaller classes in the primaries so important to the job. Opponents are trying in vain to put the responsibility for that door to the SNP. The figures come before the Office.
‘Bin Laden’ blames US for global warming
A new message said to be from al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has blamed global warming on the US and other big industrial nations.
The audio tape, broadcast on al-Jazeera TV, urges a boycott of the US dollar “to free humankind from slavery”.
It comes days after another tape said to be from Bin Laden was released, praising the attempted bombing of a US airliner on 25 December.
The authenticity of neither tape has been verified.
But IntelCenter, a US group that monitors Islamist activity, has said the voice on the earlier tape appeared to be that of Bin Laden.
“All industrial nations, mainly the big ones, are responsible for the crisis of global warming,” the latest tape says.
“This is a message to the whole world about those who are causing climate change, whether deliberately or not, and what we should do about that.”
The tape criticises the administration of former US President George W Bush for not ratifying the Kyoto Protocol on combating climate change.
“Bush the son, and the [US] Congress before him, rejected this agreement only to satisfy the big companies.”
The tape also urges a boycott of the US dollar. “I know that there would be huge repercussions for that, but this would be the only way to free humankind from slavery… to America and its companies.”
Responding to the earlier audio tape, also broadcast on al-Jazeera, US President Barack Obama said it indicated how weakened Osama Bin Laden had become.
“Bin Laden sending out a tape trying to take credit for a Nigerian student who engaged in a failed bombing attempt is an indication of how weakened he is, because this is not something necessarily directed by him,” he said.
A Nigerian man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, is charged with attempting to blow up a transatlantic US airliner over Detroit on 25 December.
The Yemen-based regional wing of al-Qaeda has said it was behind the attempted attack.
